Used for hunting, the breed was developed from the extinct Old English terrier and the otter hound. These dogs have also been used for the police and military.
As the tallest terrier, Airedales are good watch dogs and guard dogs. They are agile and active dogs with great eyesight. This strong, confident breed may not be ideal for the first time dog owner. Very intelligent and loyal.
Requires a fair amount of exercise and should have a large fenced yard to run around in.
Will play rough and may not be suitable around small children.
Hip dysplasia can be an issue.
Coat: Tan and black. Sometimes red mixed in with the black.
Soft undercoat with wiry dense fur that must be hand stripped or trimmed.
Life Span: Up to 14 years.
Shoulder Height: up to 24 inches (60 cm)
Weight: 40 - 60 pounds (18 to 27 kg).
