SIZE
The shoulder-height is about 39 - 41cm (15 1/2 - 16 1/2in) for dogs and 38 - 39cm (17- 15 1/2in) for bitches. The weight is about 13kg (28 1/2lb).

COAT
The hair is smooth, silken, and medium length. It should never be curly. The most usual colors are russet brown, liver, black, black and tan, white with black, red, or liver patches (with or without tan markings), blue roan, orange roan, and liver roan (with or without tan markings).

CARE REQUIRED
The coat of English Cocker Spaniels tangles easily, so it is necessary to brush and comb them thoroughly regularly. Do not overlook the hair between the front and back legs and the hair on the ears. These should be cleaned regularly and excess hair removed. The Cocker Spaniel should have excessive hair on the top of the head, beneath the ears, and on the neck plucked out regularly by hand. Depending upon the condition of the coat this should be done - by a dog parlor if necessary - twice to four times each year.

CHARACTER
These are cheerful, lively, gentle and affectionate dogs that are intelligent and pliable.

TRAINING
The English Cocker Spaniel is a naturally pliable dog which grasps what you want it to do. Train them with understanding and consistency: Given half a chance by you, the English Cocker Spaniel will lead you a merry dance.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR
Dogs of this breed can usually get on well with pets, other dogs, and children. Make sure the children are not too rough with the dog because they allow themselves to be used as toys.

EXERCISE
This dog is reasonably content with three quick turns around the neighborhood but do not overlook its need for regular opportunities to run freely in the countryside. Most of them love to swim.
