These tall slender dogs were originally bred to hunt wolves and leopards several thousand years before Christ (BC). They were later used to guard sheep. As sight hounds, their long coats kept them warm in mountainous areas of Afghanistan. This is where their name comes from. The breed came to North America in the late 1920's and became a popular pet among the wealthy. Related to greyhounds.
Afghans are an active breed, requiring a fair amount of exercise. Like all hounds, a high fence is recommended and a great deal of training is required if they are ever let off leash. They are much quieter indoors and make gentle companions.
These fast runners do well at lure coursing. This is where several dogs chase a string pulled lure across a field.
Though good at problem solving, this breed does not excel at competitive obedience.
